Understanding Different Types of Motorcycle Clutches

A wet clutch is immersed in oil, which offers lubrication and cooling. Most motorcycles (Eg-Dirt bikes)have this style of clutch. It is made up of alternating friction and steel plates that engage and disengage to convey power. The oil also helps to reduce wear and extend the clutch's lifespan.


Dry Clutch

A dry clutch, unlike a wet clutch, operates without the use of oil. It engages and disengages the clutch plates using friction material. Dry clutches are often lighter and have a higher power transfer efficiency. They are typically found in high-performance motorbikes and racing bikes.


 Multiplate Clutch

A multiplate clutch, as the name implies, is made up of many clutch plates. It has a larger surface area for improved power transfer and torque management capabilities. Heavy-duty motorcycles, some sports bikes and off-road bikes frequently use multiplate clutches.


Slipper Clutch

A slipper clutch is a type of clutch that prevents the back wheel from locking up during rapid downshifting. It makes use of a complicated mechanism that allows the clutch to partially slip, thereby lessening the impacts of engine braking. Slipper clutches are popular in sport bikes and racing motorbikes.


Centrifugal Clutch / Automatic Clutch


Centrifugal clutches, usually referred to as automated clutches, are commonly seen in scooters and small displacement motorbikes. They work by using centrifugal force to engage and disengage the clutch when the engine speed changes. This sort of clutch does not require manual clutch control, making it user-friendly and convenient for city commuting.
